Truth or Dare

Jessica Cameron has carved her name across the horror genre. Labelled as to one of the genre’s leading ladies, she has starred in plentiful of blood splattered slashers from ‘Silent Night’ to ‘The Black Dahlia Haunting’. Not only does she star in ‘Truth or Dare’ but she has this time dared (like what we did there?) to step behind the camera to direct.

‘Truth or Dare’ is exactly what it says on the tin. A group of friends host an online video channel dedicated to the game of truth or dare played between themselves. Gaining a high profile and notoriety for their games, not least as they involve death defying stunts including Russian roulette with a revolver. However it soon comes to light that these stunts a faux played by the band and when show fanatic Derek finds out he is less than pleased. As the friends vacate to an isolated house to spend the week making new episodes of Truth or Dare, Derek crashes the party and the results end up a little different to how they first imagined.

‘Truth or Dare’ is hands down the most fucked up film you will see all year. Jessica Cameron manages to set the bar for films to come that want to make you squeal. Made on a low budget, for the first half you can tell however by the closing climax it becomes obvious where the heart and soul went to this movie. Bringing with it a tense atmosphere that carries through to the end, even when there is some humour injected into the script, the following actions take it away.

In hindsight the cast involved do their best to portray themselves as a likable bunch of friends but from round one of the reinvention of the game, the likability factor drops to nil except for Heather Dorff (we feel for her pain in seeking a man after this) who gives the best performance from an amateur bunch. At times, it all becomes reminiscent of the video nasties of the 70’s. The obvious point to ‘Truth or Dare’ is to shock and Cameron has hit every button to make sure it does and for the most part it manages to make you grab onto every body part and beg for it to stay. The chemistry between Ray (Shelby Stehlin) and fellow Courtney (Devanny Pinn) goes to a whole new level.

The paper thin plot may be the excuse Cameron needed to put a bunch of disturbing scenes together but it works well enough to keep the action coming and cover such deep subjects as Paedophilia, incest, testicular cancer and even nipple tassles all through the hands of Ryan Kiser's maniacal fanboy.

Despite some amateur performances, ‘Truth or Dare’ manages to make its name as 2014’s most fucked up film and earn plenty of accolades for visual effects. Cameron should be proud as her first foray in the directors seat has left a stamp across the horror community and will require strong stomach for anyone not used to this level of blood and guts on their screen. If ever a film should be banned, this is it!
