The Open House

THE OPEN HOUSE sees a mother and son occupy a relative’s home. Their temporary accommodation happens to be for sale and after an open house sales pitch, mysterious events begin to unravel.

If I were to delve deeper into either character or plot it would be more investment than the film makers had made for what is a lousy addition to the slasher genre that adds nothing new, and nothing to saviour.

The problem with THE OPEN HOUSE is simple, it is lazy. A film that has a seen-it-all-before stalk and slash ethos and lack of any satisfying closure (the film literally leaves with an abrupt end to the events and has the cheek to tease a sequel). The film lacks depth to which the films plot is as basic as a killer stalks its victims for no reason and moves onto the next.

As I move on with this review I can’t help but feel that there is no point, the film has been done better, the effort here is minimal and how such a film has actually got as much hype on Netflix proves why the subscription service really needs to curb its spend in favour of quality. While THE OPEN HOUSE doesn’t house any big names like some of its more recent ventures, the promise of an inventive original horror was enough to entice many viewers only to disappoint.
