The Beast

‘The Beast’ is a short horror film that sees Jacob (Alexander Le Bas), a young boy become a werewolf and from the outset it’s apparent this kid needs no welcoming. Tied to a tree by his father (Bill Oberst Jr.) and fellow villager Douglas (Peter Le Bas). The trio fight their feuds and hearts as they fend for the boy and seek to protect not only him, but themselves.

Culminating in a tragic loss, what makes ‘The Beast’ is not it’s make-up, it’s setting or high quality editing. It’s the core basis of story-telling and the brilliant actors who make this such a powerful film.

Set against a beautifully crafted score, ‘The Beast’ will make you shiver with terror and has the charm of many of Universals classic monster movies, most notably ‘The Wolf Man’.

Peter Dukes manages to keep to the classic “less-is-more” motif to great effect and pulls off a wonderfully crafted horror film that is not only a chilling story but a memorable ode to the monster films of yesteryear.

When a film leaves you wanting more, and especially a short film, you can only hope that what comes next is more of the same and in that short 12 minutes, you feel sorrow, fear and anger that few full length films can muster.
