Little Evil

What starts off as a seemingly generic horror comedy turns out to be a strong contender for one of the best comedies of the year. LITTLE EVIL may have a touch of THE OMEN in its story but it’s more akin to GHOSTBUSTERS and KRAMPUS, a hybrid of horror and comedy that perfectly balances chuckles with tension.

Adam Scott is perfectly cast as the step dad in charge of childminding his wife’s child who was born from an unnatural conception. As Gary learns of Lucas’ heritage and legacy, he must show the true meaning of fatherhood to save not only his family, but maybe even the world.

OK, so LITTLE EVIL sounds smooshy and to some degree it really is but it’s a damn good ride to enjoy. While Samantha Evangeline Lilly is bashing her husband’s lack of compassion, the sight of Lucas dragging his body downstairs is both hilarious and terrifyingly calm and that’s not to mention a great turn from Sally Field. In fact, much of LITTLE EVIL’s credit is as much toward the supporting cast as it is to its central leads.

THE OMEN may be an idol here and LITTLE EVIL stays true to its source material with evil goings on, twisted cults and a facing off with the devil but it’s never too far from tongue in cheek.

While this won’t win any awards for its terror, it maintains a good balance for humour and storytelling that allows the subject matter to be an enjoyable romp and prestige to the genre rather than a parody.

Fans of TUCKER AND DALE will notice the film is somewhat toned down for a more mainstream audience with a lack of gore and shock but instead has plenty of charm that will mark it as a family favourite rather than a late night pleasure.
