The Goriest Scenes in Sci-fi Horror

Science Fiction has been a favourite genre of many for generations and with sub genres such as

Sci-Fi Thriller and Sci-Fi Horror, audiences have witnessed some of the most gruesome scenes in

cinematic history. In the run up to Alien: Covenant being released in UK cinemas and IMAX this

Friday, we are taking a look back at some of the goriest scenes in sci-fi.

Alien

To kick of our list we’re starting with Ridley Scott’s first Alien movie which was released in 1979. One of the most gruesome scenes in this film is when John Hurt’s character Kane is killed by a Xenomorph exploding out of his chest. The scene starts off innocently enough, with Kane appearing to be choking on his food surrounded by his concerned crew members. However things quickly turn south as his chest explodes and a creature emerges from his stomach. If you haven’t seen this before, you should expect some serious blood and guts.

The Thing

Responsible for your nightmares since 1982, John Carpenter’s The Thing has a seriously high gore factor. The most memorable scene being that of another chest exit. In this scene Dr. Cooper, played by Richard Dysart is trying to revive Vance Norris played by Charles Hallahan. Dr. Cooper’s hands are inside Vance’s chest as he’s massaging his heart when suddenly they are cut off, spraying blood everywhere. This is then swiftly followed by a gruesome line of what looks like bloody muscle attached to a screaming human head. Let’s just say that this clip is not for the faint hearted.

Cloverfield

Matt Reeves Cloverfield follows the story of a group of friends trying to escape New York during a monster attack. In one of the more gruesome parts of the film, the below clip depicts the group being found by the military. In an aid to protect them the army move the friends to the hospital whilst they tell let them know they are trying to relocate them to a safe place. As you can imagine some images in the hospital are pretty gross, especially when a member of the group falls ill and is taken away by army medics. She doesn’t last long and unfortunately meets a grisly end…

The Fly

The 1986 version of the film directed by David Cronenberg follows a mad scientist accidentally transforming himself into a fly/human hybrid. This film is pretty gory throughout (especially the transformation) but the ending is a real humdinger. The scene below follows the scientist as he tries to turn his girlfriend into a fly/human hybrid against her will. With flesh ripping, blood and eyeballs falling out of their sockets this ending is certainly ghastly; and all done without the use of CGI.

Scanners

Blood, guts and gore. Another film from David Cronenberg that was released in 1981, this film is similar to The Fly in terms of SFX as it includes lots of blood spilling from veins, eyeballs exploding out of sockets and flesh being ripped off faces. For those who love horror films with an extra order of gore, this is the one for you.

Starship Troopers

Starship troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven and released in 1997. This is your classic sci-fi action adventure film, following a group of humans in their fight for survival against an alien invasion. The aliens who attack the humans kill them by puncturing a tentacle through the skull and draining all the life from them. Gross, right?

Event Horizon

Paul Anderson directed this 1997 classic which pursues a rescue crew that finds a spaceship that has returned from vanishing into a black hole. However the space ship has something new onboard. This clip in question involves a flash back that depicts some pretty gruesome images of a boy being crucified and a woman with barbed wire cutting into her face.
