Cult of Chucky

Everyone’s favourite child’s toy is back and this time he’s bringing company. The 7th entry in the CHILD’S PLAY franchise brings a welcome return to series favourites and adds a new chapter to the killer doll’s comedy/horror legacy.

Taking place mere months after the events of CURSE OF CHUCKY, CULT… sees Nica (Fiona Dourif) assigned to a mental recovery outpost to overcome her fear for the doll. Least do any of the unbelieving inhabitants realise is that Chucky (Brad Dourif) promised to be friends ‘til the end and returns to wreak havoc for Nica and brings some friends to the party including original victim Andy (Alex Vincent).

Those expecting this to be as horror focussed as the last entry may be somewhat disappointed as CULT OF CHUCKY feels more akin to BRIDE and SEED than any of the grittier entries but it works all the better for it. Luckily, the 7th movie manages to tie up the series connective tissues and brings back long forgotten characters with those introduced in the reinvented CURSE OF CHUCKY. Tonally, this edges more on the comedy side but manages to shoehorn a few tense moments, most of which are led by Fiona Dourif’s once again great emotional character.

While at the centre of CULT OF CHUCKY are some great performances, the new twist to the often overlooked voodoo element of the Chucky arc makes for some interesting direction to where the series can go and with such a great cast, it’s hard not to look forward to what the future will bring as soon as the credits roll.

Fans of the franchise will enjoy a welcome return and while seasoned horror fans who prefer the darker side of horror and did not enjoy any previous instalment won’t be won over here. Luckily, Chucky is a man/toy of his word and thankfully along with the trusting creative team, will definitely be our friend ‘til the end.
