15 Films Not to Miss at FrightFest 2015 Continued

We Are Still Here

Friday 28th August - Arrow Video Screen - 23:00

A throwback to the genre’s golden age, ‘We Are Still Here’ cares little for bringing anything new to the genre but rather focusing on what makes horror so great. Refreshingly, Ted Geoghegon’s love letter to Hammer brings with it a genuine scare factor along with a climax that will have any bloodthirsty film goer quenched.

The Nightmare

Saturday 29th August - Splice Media Screen - 13:20

Acclaimed director Rodney Ascher (‘Room 237’) delivers a documentary on the phenomenon of many restless nights. What is striking about this feature is it’s feet firmly in reality on a subject that in itself could be a fictional movie at the film festival. Promising vivid recreations and an insight into sleep paralysis, this documentary may leave you without a good night’s sleep.

Another Me

Saturday 29th August - Discovery Screen 2 - 16:50

Hosting starring roles for some of Britain’s biggest stars, ‘Another Me’ is a classic horror story that goes back to a simpler time for horror when suspense was the real star. Sophie Turner, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Rhys Ifans, this adaptation of Cathy MacPhail’s novel is credited to a younger audience than many of FrightFest’s other films but may well be the calm chills needed in a weekend full of blood, sweat and tears.

Over Your Dead Body

Sunday 30th August - Splice Media Screen - 10:30

Make sure you’re up nice and early on Sunday morning to catch Takeshi Miike’s violent blur between reality and fiction as stars and stage collide to perform a presentation of ‘Yotsuya Kaidan’. With themes of jealousy, love and obsession, the films spirit takes over more than  just the story.  This may not appear to be typical Miike fodder but rest assured, it’s supernatural  undertones and character emotion will lead another shining example of how Asian cinema is still a force to be reckoned with.

Hellraiser

Sunday 30th August - Discovery Screen 2 - 18:40

With the recent announcement that the original trilogy is to be re-released by Arrow, now could not be a better time to catch the original gory pleasure seeker on the big screen. The cenobites take over the Discovery Screen as Frank searches for the ultimate pleasure but you already knew that. Catch up with the stars and crew ahead of this screening with ‘Leviathan’ the most complete documentary around Clive Barker’s masterpiece and its sequel ‘Hellbound’.

Banjo

Monday 31st August - Pheonix Artist Club Screen - 10:45

Starring ‘The Human Centipede’ franchise star Laurence Harvey as a man who’s buckaroo’d from the straws placed on his back. Bullies, a cheating partner and a workplace familiar to many, Harvey conjures up an old imaginary friend who may be more menace to society than sanitizer to his mundane life. ‘Banjo’ is one of many British entries to this years FrightFest and holds host to a cream of British talent that I’m sure many look forward to seeing.

Night Fare

Monday 31st August - Arrow Screen - 16:00

Fans of ‘Maniac’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ may find a match made in heaven as two fare dodgers are stalked by a mysterious cabbie who they wish they hadn’t got on the wrong side of.

Emelie

Monday 31st August - Film4 Screen - 18:30

When a babysitter takes over the duty of three children, the peaceful night the Thompsons (not the same family who appeared at 2012’s FrightFest) expected may not be the one that plays out as their carer for the evening turns out to be psychologically unhinged. Think ‘Home Alone’ meets the opposite of ‘The Strangers’ and you may be somewhere close to the tension ‘Emelie’ will hold.

Tales Of Halloween

Monday 31st August - Film4 Screen - 20:30

It wouldn’t be FrightFest without an anthology and with an absent space usually filled by ‘V/H/S’ this time we have a collection promising more treats than tricks (for those who saw last years ‘V/H/S: Viral’ that pun plays on a multitude of levels). Closing this years proceedings is a Halloween anthology containing 10 shorts from directors including  Axelle Carolyn, Darren Lynn Bousman, Lucky McKee and Neil Marshell. ‘Tales of Halloween’ promises some quality films from quality directors and is sure to be a seasonal repeat for many horror fans who loved ‘Trick r Treat’.
